In the whole course from the beginning to the end of this book, this collection enforces the beauty and the fierce character of the author, as I will try to show you in this essay. It also brings to life past, present, and possible future of the women presented by Sonia Sanchez. Sonia Sanchez was born Wilsonia Benita Driver on September 9th, 1934 in Birmingham, Alabama. A year later, her mother, Lena Driver died. Nine years later, Sonia and her sister moved to Harlem to live with their father, Wilson L. Driver. She received a Bachelors Associates degree in political science from Hunter College in 1955. After graduating, a year later, she started studying poetry at New York University with Louise Bogan, who was also a poet. Sonia Sanchez had been a professor at so many universities, but she was mostly influential fo r her students in the English Department at Temple University. In her career she has published 12 poetry collections and four plays. The book, Shake Loose My Skin: New and Selected Poems, was published in 1999. It covers her 30 years of work, where she speaks of the struggles of black women in 60s and 70s and she also reaches out to them.
